SALIX

The well known Willows. Many excel for waterside planting, there are
forms grown for their vivid framework of Winter stems, some for their
fluffy Spring catkins and others for their coloured leaf. Few plant
families are more varied in shape and size - from tiny alpines a few
inches high to some of largest and fastest Trees in the world. All are
very hardy.

alba britzensis 15’ The Scarlet Willow is often used as an effective
streamside specimen where the dazzling scarlet stems really shine
during the Winter. Can be pollarded, like a Cornus.

caprea pendula 6’ Kilmarnock Willow or Weeping Pussy Willow. A
stiffly weeping umbrella shaped tree which comes alive in the very
early Spring with its mass of velvety silver catkins which burst into a
mass of primrose stamens. A magnet to early bees and butterflies and a
very compact tree for the smaller garden.

chrysocoma 20’ The classic golden Weeping Willow. Few trees are
more elegant and luxuriant than a large specimen of this with its
cascading curtains of drooping ephemeral foliage and yellow older
stems all clad in fresh green leaf ... a cooling and calming tree swaying
gently in the Summer breeze ...
