CRATAEGUS

Generally small trees that are hardy and adaptable, growing well
anywhere. The well known Thorns, tolerant of drought and also pruning
to keep them in shape. Collectively also known as the flowering Mays,
there must be few finer sights than these trees when completely
covered by their blossom, providing a valuable later display after the
flowering Cherries and Crab Apples are over, many also reward with a
display of Autumn fruits.

Big Golden Star (pinnatifida major) A new selection of this undervalued tree with quite large, handsomely shaped leaves of soft downy green and excellent Autumn leaf colour of burning orange and gold. The conspicuous mellow-gold fruits can be over 3cm in diameter and produce a very striking Winter display. The growth is virtually thornless. Choice, rare and new. £17.95

laevigata The trees in this group are all reasonably small in stature and are exceptional in flower giving an excellent display through May. The main group of the family, several very popular varieties have arisen All 10’

Autumn Glory White flowers in foliage hiding profusion and an excellent display of dark red fruits. Very effective cultivar.

Crimson Cloud Single flowers of scarlet with a white centre. A newer introduction and very showy indeed.

Pauls Scarlet The most popular variety of all. Double rosy scarlet flowers in a mass display. Rosea flore plena Double appleblossom pink flowers, charming.

Price – above 3 varieties £15.95 each

orientalis 8’ A small round headed tree from Greece with deeply cut attractive downy leaves and ornamental bunches of plum purple fruits in Autumn and Winter. Hardy, adaptable, the silvery aspect of the leaves is most attractive. This tree seems to be growing in popularity every year. £17.95

prunifolia 12’ Compact tree with a broad head and shiny leaves of dark
green with an almost polished appearance. White flowers, persistent
scarlet fruits and very rich Autumn colours make for a tree of lasting
décor. The leaves seem reluctant to fall in the Autumn and hang on
the tree well after most others.
