CORNUS

Although familiar shrubs for the border, the Canadian Dogwoods also include some fine small trees for the garden. Their prominent flowering bracts appear in early Summer and produce a spectacle which is invariably commented on as they are so different in appearance from any other tree. These are all rather slow growing and appreciate a good soil on the acid side. Most also produce lasting Autumn leaf colour.

controversa variegata 5’ One tree we are asked for almost more often than any other; known as the ‘Weeding Cake tree’ owing to the precise, tiered arrangement of the branches which are clothed in broadly cream margined leaves. Undoubtedly elegant and at its best very effective but so slow growing and requiring careful management perhaps to show off its best. Also appreciates a little light shade.

Eddies White Wonder 6-8’ This spectacular and beautiful small tree
arose as a cross between two famous parents, Cornus florida and
nuttallii. This tree is a flowering sensation with the very large papery
white flowers appearing in May all over the tree and normally lasting
a month. This tree has to be seen to fully appreciate the incredible
beauty and, once seen it is always desired. Brilliant Autumn coloring
is itself magnificent. Our prized Chelsea specimens are a sight to
behold. Very choice and seldom seen *highly recommended*

florida Cloud Nine 5’ A new variety which flowers abundantly at a
young age with freely produced pure white flowers all over the bush in May.

- Cherokee Chief 5’ An American selection of this small bushy
tree, each flower head has the conspicuous petal like bracts of
pure appleblossom pink and in Spring the new leaves are redtinged
too. An enchanting cultivar.
£45.95

- Rainbow 5’ Highly attractive variegated form with leaves
margined in golden yellow and becoming suffused red as Summer
progresses. The flowers are white.
£46.95

kousa 5’ This Japanese group of flowering Cornus rate amongst the
most attractive of all large shrubs or small trees. The distinctive creamy
white bracts are long lasting and coolly beautiful throughout June and
early July. Rich Autumn colours. Seldom offered for sale and that is a
shame – they deserve to be in every garden. They really shine in light
shade and with a good, deep peaty soil, although totally ericaceous
conditions are not essential. We offer the form ‘chinensis’ with extra
large flowers.
£24.95

mas 6’ The Cornelian Cherry. Valued for its display of scented yellow
flower clusters which appear in late Winter on the naked branches.
Can be grown equally as a larger shrub at the rear of the border or
grown into a small tree.
