GENERAL INFORMATION

SIZE ON DESPATCH
All of our trees are top quality, fully graded stock selected at the best stage for transplanting the variety concerned. We regret that with such a huge range of different species and types on offer it is not possible to give exact sizes on delivery, we wish it were that simple ! As a rough guide the greater majority will be around 4’ - 5’ on delivery. But some will be smaller and some will be larger.

Obviously those which are more compact or slow growing will be smaller on dispatch and the larger, more vigorous trees will be bigger. There is nothing less than around 2.5-3’ on delivery. A more expensive tree does not indicate a larger size at dispatch – price is based on ease or difficulty of propagation or general value/demand for a variety concerned. We do not advocate the planting of older and bigger trees.

Tempting though this may seem, there may be problems in aftercare and continuing survival and lets not forget the simple satisfaction of watching a tree grow and mature before our eyes! A younger tree will establish more quickly and grow away with more vigour than planting an older specimen which will often ‘sit’ for awhile as it tries to overcome the shock. Often after only a couple of years there is very little to choose between the older and younger tree.

VISITING THE NURSERY
We are primarily a Mail Order Nursery and our efforts are geared towards providing the best service we can offer in this sector. The Nursery is open to the public (telephone for current hours) but please remember that the vast majority of trees are grown bare-rooted on our fields and these are not open to view. A limited range are available to see and buy in containers at any given time. There are no mature specimens to view. Advice is freely given and best by phone fax or e-mail.If you wish to collect your order it is wise to place your order in advance and this can then be made ready for you to collect at a certain time convenient to us both.

DESPATCH TIMES
Our despatch period runs from October to early April and this is the best time to plant, whilst they are dormant. Please place your order as early as possible to avoid disappointment and remember the rarer/newer varieties will sell out so please help us to help you by ordering early.

SYMBOLS
To help with your selection the following symbols have been used.

Pot Means particularly recommended for pots or containers/small spaces. These can of course be planted out into the garden as well and may be particularly suited to small gardens and restricted beds and borders.
(E) Is for trees which are evergreen.
(F) Means the tree is fragrant. This can be the flowers or leaves/sap.
(II) Is for columnar/fastigiate trees. Straight up and down specimens are great for providing the value of vertical accent in a border, lining a driveway – or fitting into a very restricted area.
(*) Means that a sheltered place is advised. These are trees which may require some protection, especially whilst establishing or which will not take prolonged severe frost.  The greatest majority of the trees we offer are bone-hardy anywhere, only a few need a more favoured area.
Bird Is for trees which are good for wildlife
