WHISPERING TREES NURSERIES

A 'Whispering Tree' is a special tree........

Welcome to a superb collection of all the most beautiful Ornamental Trees.

We have specialised in growing and despatching trees for over 30 years. As a result we have amassed a collection of the most choice and special flowering trees, ornamental trees and small trees, trees for every imaginable situation and use.

A tree for every garden
It is certainly true these days that no matter where you live you can find the space for a tree. All the loveliest gardens depend on at least one or two trees to give that distinct character and sense of permanence. An ornamental tree gives us shade to relax under, fragrance, smooth bark, rustling leaf and also provide a haven for wildlife. Many gardeners will have their own criteria when choosing what to grow, be it for providing wildlife, shade, privacy, fragrance, berry, coloured leaf or whatever. You will find lots of recommendations here as well as trees with a distinct shape – columnar, weeping, round headed, flat topped etc. Read on and discover a fascinating and almost never ending world of trees in all their magnificent forms!

Trees for small gardens
These are particularly well catered for as gardeners today inevitably have to contend with smaller pieces of land. There are a number of small trees ideal for small gardens, and also for Patio and container growing too. Read our recommendations to find out more; the exquisite new Malus Coral Burst, the dwarfing Japanese Cherry Little Pink Perfection, small Lilac 'Miss Kim' or the Mountain Ash Autumn Spire are just a few small trees to whet the appetite. So, if you are looking for a special tree for a small garden, then you are bound to find all the loveliest ones here. These species are also trees ideal for patio container growing. Also look out for the classy Gleditsia Ruby Lace and the weeping Pea tree, Caragana Walkers with its perfectly steeply pendant branches; a very small tree of just 5' in height when mature, it is clustered with lemon yellow flowers in early summer and has lovely foliage too.

Fragrant trees
Perhaps the most special trees are those that have that extra dimension, the sensory heaven of fragrance. Fragrant trees abound in our specialist range. This can take many forms; from the wondrous aroma of burnt sugar and strawberries that the fading leaves of the Katsura tree emit in Autumn; the elusively fascinating Balsam scent of the Balsam Poplar which is released from its sticky buds in the Springtime, especially noticeable after a warm rain. And of course the many and varied fragrant trees that have flowers that are perfumed. The delicate violet fragrance of the Malus 'charlottae' the heavy honeysuckle perfume of the little known Hop Tree, Ptelea trifoliata. Or the cherry blossom delight of the Japanese Flowering Cherry 'Fragrant Cloud', so aptly named. Our Magnolia tree 'Heaven Scent' smells like Lily of the Valley! There are many more fragrant trees from which to choose.

Evergreen Trees
Much sought after as gardeners demand privacy and shelter. There are plenty of evergreen trees displayed on these pages from majestic Evegreen Oak Trees to Strawberry Trees with their evergreen glossy leaves and the powerful Eucalyptus – surely evergreen trees beyond compare with their quick growth and aromatic foliage, as well as a good range of evergreen coniferous trees, or maybe choice Eucryphia, an elegant flowering tree for woodland conditions will enthuse your imagination. Not to mention those classic evergreen trees, the Hollies, of which we stock an amazing collection including, weeping, blue leaved and yellow berried forms!

Wisteria NEW!
Don't miss our special Wisteria section. Wisteria are our personal favourites and surely the most favoured of all the climbing plants. Read how to grow wisteria, how to prune them for reliable flowering plus a host of ideas on how best to use them in the garden. You can grow a special Wisteria 'tree', or plant them over arches, gazebos, outbuildings and more. We have a very wide range of all the best and most choice, beautiful varieties and all our Wisteria plants are grafted and well grown, for added quality. Wisteria are special; make sure yours comes from a specialist grower.

Trees for gifts
There is an every increasing interest in sending trees for gifts or as commemorative presents. Such a gesture is very appropriate because a tree will provide a lasting memento for years and years and years, growing in stature and giving more and more pleasure each year. You will have your own ideas as to which trees might be the most well received. See our special section on Trees recommended for gifts and commemorative plantings.

Trees in pots and containers
It is surprising how many types are suitable for such cultivation. Infact all but the most vigorous types can be grown in containers, at least for a few years and will often downsize their normal growth characteristics to fit the available space. But there are also a great number of forms, selections and varieties that are ideal for containers and your patio can and will benefit greatly from the form of trees which provide a definite structure and sense of permanence over the smaller subjects that also abound there. The dwarf Magnolia 'Betty' dwarf Lilac 'Miss Kim' columnar Mountain Ash Autumn Spire, little Japanese flowering Cherry Little Pink Perfection of the charming Fuji Cherry ‘The Bride’ are all ideal as are the Japanese Maples and Malus Laura, sargentii Tina and Coral Burst. Many more small trees for pots abound in the main sections.

Tree sizes on despatch
With such a huge range from which to choose, inevitably there is huge variation in how big they are when you get them and we can’t give exact sizes for all the many species and varieties we grow and offer. However as a guide, the majority of the ornamental trees we despatch are between 4-6' in height. These are supplied as bare rooted trees of fine quality and grade. A few of the more vigorous species are even larger, some of the 'shrubby' types [marked with an * against the name] are smaller and supplied at 'shrub size' and are often in pots or rootballed. These will grow into small trees when mature but these are the species that start of as smaller shrub type growers.

We generally advise the planting of younger trees and, although often asked, we do not offer mature or semi mature trees. The seeming advantage of planting an older tree is often NOT the reality for they often receive a 'check' when being transplanted. No older tree LIKES to be moved and they can struggle to re-establish. A younger tree grows far more quickly initially and establishes more quickly with no loss of momentum or trouble and is also considerably cheaper.

Despatch of all our Ornamental trees commences in October and finishes in early April. If you order after early April your order will be booked for despatch in the Autumn as soon as the trees are ready again. Although we carry good stocks of most trees, it is always a good idea to order early, during the summer is preferable. As orders are taken in rotation of receipt, this ensures the earlier despatch times and also makes sure you get the rarer varieties that may be in short supply. You can of course order anytime, if you order during the despatch season then your order will be despatched as soon as possible depending on how many orders are in the despatch system. We are generally able to offer a fast despatch turnaround, once the forward orders are complete.

Eventual heights
Are given in brackets after the variety name. This is NOT the despatch size. A lot of information on tree growth rates has been published over the years, not all of it accurate these days. Some older books take information from specimens growing ‘in the wild’ in their native habitat. Such species seldom reach their full potential here. Also most trees these days are grafted onto a rootstock, which hasn’t always been the case. Such trees are often smaller in growth as the rootstock controls the vigour of the tree. This is often an advantage for garden trees. Lastly, no tree ever stops growing. We offer a size gauged at 10 years; many will have attained the greatest part of their size then, but will continue to grow slowly after that.

A * indicates that variety is especially rare or in short supply. There may be awaiting list. There is a relatively small amount of species or varieties that this applies to. The greatest majority of our trees will be available ex stock, during the despatch season.
